Xylitol is a sugar substitute, also known as birch sugar, as it was originally derived from the bark of the birch tree. Nowadays, it is mainly obtained from various berries and fruits, but due to its chemical processing, it cannot be labeled as a natural sugar substitute. Xylitol is designated E967 and contains about 60% of the calories of regular sugar.
Xylitol is suitable for diabetics and for weight loss. Additionally, the sugar substitute contributes to dental health – it is no coincidence that it is found in many dental care chewing gums. Good to know: Xylitol is toxic to dogs, so treats containing birch sugar should not be within your pet's reach.
The daily dose of a maximum of 150 g should not be exceeded. As with all sugar alcohols, it is also advisable to gradually find your personal comfort amount.
Xylitol tastes very sweet and closely resembles the taste of regular sugar – many notice hardly any difference when switching.
Xylitol has the same sweetness as regular sugar. This makes dosing particularly easy: you can replace sugar in your recipes 1:1 with xylitol without needing to recalculate.
Xylitol is ideal for baking and is often found in beverages, desserts, and muesli. Whether in cake batter, coffee, or homemade pudding – birch sugar can be used as versatile as sugar itself.
Well-known xylitol brands in our shop include Birkengold and Xucker. Want to compare sugar alternatives? Then take a look at Erythrit – the nearly calorie-free sugar substitute that is often used alongside xylitol in sugar-free cooking.
