8 Tips for a Low-Lactose Diet

8 Tips for a Low-Lactose Diet

Lactose intolerance is now as widespread as gluten intolerance and is becoming increasingly common. In the case of lactose intolerance, milk sugar is not fully or not at all digested, leading to symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.

To avoid these complaints, you should primarily refrain from dairy products. There are many products available in a lactose-free version, including some of our foods here in the shop.

We will provide you with some tips so that you can enjoy your daily life despite your intolerance.

  1. Avoid obviously dairy products such as cheese, milk, and cream to prevent your symptoms from being triggered.
  2. Take a closer look at the dairy product shelves in the supermarket: There are plenty of alternatives that look and taste like dairy products but do not contain lactose. Butter, for example, contains almost no lactose, and you can still buy it as usual.
  3. Pay attention to the ingredient list: Many products contain traces of lactose or milk sugar that are not immediately obvious. For example, lactose can also be found in ready-made meals, sauces, processed meats, and baked goods.
  4. Get a medical examination: To ensure that your symptoms are not caused by another intolerance or illness, have this clarified by your doctor.
  5. Opt for plant-based milk alternatives: Oat milk, soy milk, coconut milk. These are naturally lactose-free and can be a good alternative to cow's milk.
  6. Experiment: Some products like yogurt or kefir are considered fermented dairy products, where the milk sugar is broken down by bacteria. As a result, the product contains less lactose. Depending on the severity of your intolerance, it is quite possible that you can tolerate these products.
  7. Take lactase supplements: To prevent your intolerance: Lactase breaks down the lactose in foods. These supplements should be taken before consuming lactose-containing foods, but you should also consult your doctor beforehand!
  8. Plan your meals, be mindful of restaurant visits: By planning your meals in advance, you can ensure that you always have enough lactose-free alternatives at home. Also, when dining out, make sure that the dish does not contain lactose.
