Effects of sugary foods on dental and oral health

Effects of sugary foods on dental and oral health

Sugar not only harms health in general, but especially attacks our teeth. This is because sugar is converted into acid by bacteria in the mouth. The acid attacks the tooth enamel, making the teeth increasingly sensitive to temperature and pain due to enamel erosion. Additionally, with advanced enamel loss, it is possible for the teeth to become brittle and for severe carious lesions to form.

Tooth enamel forms the outermost layer of our teeth and is considered the hardest substance in our body. Over time, however, it wears down primarily due to acidic and sugary foods.

Eliminating sugar from the diet would be the best choice for dental health. However, sugar is present in many different foods, even when it is not immediately recognizable. Here, you will learn how to maintain your dental and oral health to prevent the consequences of enamel loss.

To avoid completely giving up sweets, you can easily replace foods in your diet with those sweetened with sugar substitutes instead of regular sugar. This significantly reduces the risk of enamel damage. However, you are only completely free from this risk if you consistently and entirely avoid sugar of any kind.

Sugar substitutes have the advantage of tasting sweet and are neither plaque-forming nor cariogenic. Additionally, they contain fewer calories, making them a healthier alternative to regular sugar.

Sugar substitutes are particularly suitable for cooking, baking, and sweetening foods. For example, Maltitol, Sorbitol, and Xylitol are among these substances. In our shop, you will find many foods and sweets that are sweetened with these sugar substitutes.

However, it should be noted that most sugar substitutes can have a laxative effect in large quantities, so consumption in moderation is recommended.

We will give you some tips on how to preserve your tooth enamel and prevent enamel loss:

  • You should brush your teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • You should use an enamel-strengthening gel once a week in addition.
  • Be mindful of acidic foods and rinse your mouth with water after consumption to remove acid residues from your teeth.
  • If you brush your teeth after eating, wait at least half an hour after eating to allow the enamel enough time to regenerate.
  • Fatty and dairy foods help keep the enamel healthy.
  • Chewing sugar-free gum after consuming acidic and sugary foods can help break down acid in the mouth more quickly due to increased saliva production.
  • Consume enough vitamins and trace elements to contribute to dental and oral health.
  • You can sweeten your coffee or tea with sweeteners instead of sugar.
  • To be on the safe side, have your teeth checked by a dentist at least twice a year and take advantage of professional teeth cleaning. Additionally, your dentist can provide you with individual tips specifically for your dental and oral situation.

Here you will find some foods from our shop that are sweetened with sugar substitutes and therefore represent a healthier alternative to conventional products:
