Sorbit is a sugar alcohol derived from fruits such as plums, apricots, apples, and pears. The sugar substitute is designated E420 and has very few calories – an interesting alternative for anyone looking to save calories while sweetening.
Sorbit is suitable for diabetics due to its low calorie count and is gentle on dental health. Important to know: Those who suffer from sorbitol or fructose intolerance should avoid sorbitol, as it can cause digestive discomfort. In our category Low Fructose Foods, you will find suitable alternatives in this case.
The daily dose of 20 g should not be exceeded, as excessive consumption of sorbitol can have a laxative effect. When enjoyed in moderate amounts, the sugar alcohol is well tolerated – as with many sugar substitutes, the dose makes the difference here.
Sorbit has a caramel-like smell and a sweet taste. It harmoniously blends into sweet dishes without leaving an artificial aftertaste.
The sweetness of sorbit is about 40–60% of the sweetness of regular sugar. Therefore, if you want to achieve the same level of sweetness, you should use a bit more – or combine sorbit with sweeter alternatives like Xylitol, which brings the full sweetness of sugar.
Sorbit is used in various products including candies, chewing gum, bread, baked goods, and muesli. In food production, it is also valued as a moisture-retaining agent because it keeps baked goods fresh and juicy for longer – a reason why you find sorbit on many ingredient lists.
