Living sugar-free does not mean giving up sweets. In this category, you will find foods, candies, and beverages that contain no added household sugar – sweetened with sugar substitutes like Erythrit, Xylit, Maltit, or Stevia. From chocolate to cookies to syrup and fruit spreads: indulge with a clear conscience.
The terms are legally regulated: A food can be labeled as sugar-free if it contains a maximum of 0.5 g of sugar per 100 g or 100 ml. No added sugar means that no sugars or sweetening foods have been added – naturally occurring sugars (such as fructose in dried fruits) may be present. At zukono, we transparently indicate the type of sweetener used in each product, including a complete list of ingredients and nutritional values.
Less sugar means fewer empty calories, more stable blood sugar levels, and a lower risk of cavities. What happens in the body when you cut out sugar is described in our blog post Giving up sugar – what happens; the consequences of too much sugar are explained in this article.
Modern sugar substitutes come very close to the taste of sugar – Xylit sweetens 1:1, Maltit is the classic in sugar-free chocolate. Many of our customers do not taste a difference.
Not automatically: Sugar alcohols provide 2.4 kcal per gram (Erythrit: 0 kcal), and ingredients like cocoa butter or nuts have their own calories. Sugar-free primarily means: no added sugar, minimal blood sugar impact, no cavities.
Products with Erythrit or Stevia have virtually no effect on blood sugar; Maltit also has a significantly weaker effect than sugar. You can find the nutritional values of each product on the respective product page.
